Wood Engraving

Wood engraver Chris Daunt leads this summer school, which gives student the chance to experience the art of wood engraving, a relief printmaking method using engraving tools on endgrain blocks of lemonwood. Students learn how to prepare and transfer a drawing onto a block, then engrave and print the block using an Albion press, as well as hand-burnished prints.

Abstract Painting – Finding Your Voice

Robert Sosner, who has taught artists in the film and broadcast media industries, gives students an insight into the various forms of picture construction and expressive possibilities in abstract art and encourages them to find their own voice. He teaches how to analyse pictorial elements including form, narrative, composition, spatial relationships. colour, line and layering.

Ceramic Surfaces – Exploring Connections with Drawing and Printing

Tutor Joanna Veevers, a member of Contemporary Applied Arts, guides students through an exploration of drawing and mark-making on a variety of papers and then to develop them using coloured slips with clay. Students will investigate low-tech printing techniques and experiment with making incised, engraved and painted marks and images into plaster that are then transferred to a ceramic body.

Create Your Own Jewellery

Experimental Landscape Drawing

Making Beautiful Glass Beads

Teacher Sarah Downton, a member of Glass Bedmakers UK and the International Society of Glass Beadmakers, teaches students how to make glass beads in the flame using a gas torch, coloured glass rods and a series of decorative techniques. Students will practice increasingly complex designs and shaping to create a final piece of jewellery or a suite of beads.

Reshaping Cloth – Print and Manipulation

Printed textile expert Caroline Bartlett teaches this summer school, where students will investigate formal and more organic possibilities of manipulating the surface into relief and 3D structures. Students will draw on aspects of shibori, origami and smocking as well as contemporary approaches to materials, they will crumple, crush, fold, pleat and colour.

Short Story Writing

Stained Glass inspired by West Dean

Students can immerse themselves in stained glass under the guidance of tutor Carole Gray,, a member of the Contemporary Glass Society and the British Society of Master Glass Painters. She will teach traditional techniques to make stain glass and explore the use of decorative sandblasting. Inspiration can be found in the gardens and buildings of West Dean.

Bazaar Indian Summer

Sussex Prairie Garden, Morlands Farm, Wheatsheaf Road, near Henfield

Friday-Monday August 17-27, 10am-5pm

In marquees in Sussex Prairie Garden, cloths in cottons and vintage sari silk, semi-precious designer jewellery, scarves, home furnishings and gifts are ethically traded from India. There will be curries by Alex’s Curry Dhaba, with talks on textiles and Nepal by Jo Hall, plus woodblock printing for adults and children.
