Introduction to Basketry Workshop

Basketmaker Anne Marie Sullivan teaches this workshop, during which students will learn the craft of basketry by creating a Sciathog, a small shallow ribbed frame basket traditionally used for straining potatoes. Vanessa Bell Floristry Workshop

Charleston, Firle, Lewes

The workshop is run by Carlsson & Co, an East London-based floral design studio, and immerses participants in flowers, inspired by the still life paintings of the artist Vanessa Bell. The day begins with a tour of Charleston House and Garden, the home of Vanessa Bell, which became a meeting place for the artistic Bloomsbury Group, looking in detail at her still life works. Students will then create a large scale vase arrangement using home grown flowers by Carlsson & Co and seasonal flowers, learning how to combine flower shapes and colours to create form and flow. The day continues with a walk along the Old Coach Road to forage a few stems for the arrangement. Comprehensive Drawing Course

Dancing with Jewellery – Working with Unusual Materials

Robert Ebendorf  leads this summer school, where students create original pieces of jewellery as they solve the problems of working with unusual materials. Students fashion a necklace or charm bracelet with traditional materials such as silver, copper, tin and wire and then add alternatives such as found objects and recycled materials.

Exploring Sculptural Themes – Figures, Landscape, Abstract

Jon Edgar, a West Dean College tutor who has recently created bespoke short sculpture courses for the degree course at UCA, Canterbury, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and The Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts, UEA, teaches students to work with a variety of materials such as clay, wire, wax and wood to explore sculptural themes and forms. Inspiration comes from West Dean’s surrounding landscape, music or your own emotions.

Painting – Immersive Colour and Place

Printmaking With Lino

Enjoy the experimental approach to lino by tutor Dale Devereux Barker, who studied printmaking at Slade School of Fine Art. He teaches the technical skills and control to explore the medium’s potential and covers reduction lino, making multicoloured prints, using caustic soda on lino and printing without a press.

Shibori Techniques for Textile Artists

Janice Gunner teaches this course on Shibori, the Japanese word for resist dyeing of fabric. Students will work with a variety of techniques to create textured and patterned fabrics using stitch, tying, clamping, pleating and wrapping methods before dyeing with traditional blue dyes (indigo or woad) or Procion dyes to achieve other colours or over-dye effects.

Throwing Functional, Traditional and Contemporary Forms – Pottery

West Dean College tutor Alison Sandeman, who makes functional individual pieces in stoneware, porcelain and Raku, teaches students to make traditional or contemporary pottery, exploring form and function. Students will develop throwing skills, experiment with decorative techniques and learn about glazing and firing. There will also be a focus on making component parts such as handles, lids and decorative details.
