Art and Craft of Labyrinth

Tutor Daniel Doherty, a co-founder of SacredArtofGeometry, explores the philosophy and practice of labyrinths where participants learn the art of labyrinth design and construction. Participants will construct labyrinths including the classic seven circuit Cretan and Chartres Labyrinth using compasses and straight-edge, develop an understand of labyrinth forms, learn their significance and symbolism, develop their own labyrinth designs into block prints for creating embossed finger labyrinths and prints, and create a ceramic tile labyrinth. All materials are included.

Artists Open Houses Festival

Artists Open Houses in Brighton runs during the Brighton Festival, and gives art lovers the chance to visit the homes and studios of artists and makers and buy directly from them. The festival aims to open up a mix of arts and crafts to the widest possible audience, when visitors can expect to see jewellery, ceramics, textiles, paintings, sculpture, printmaking, photography and other media. There will be a chance to talk directly with the artists.


Make A Pole/Shaving Horse

Friday May 18 (four days)


Run by Amanda Waller at Underwoodsman, this course is suitable for beginners and improvers, who spend four days getting to grips with green wood techniques, including sawing, axing, saving and pole lathe turning. Participants can make a stool, a pole lathe and/or a shaving horse, or produce a range of smaller items such as gates, garden seats, besoms, carved spoons and bowls. All tools and most materials are included in the price. To make a pole lathe, there’s an extra £70 charge for materials.

The Floral Fringe Fair

Knepp Castle, West Grinstead

This eclectic, quirky, foodie, arty plantaholics wildlife event with a vintage twist takes place in front of the John Nash-designed Knepp Castle, built in 1806, on the 1,416 hectare Knepp Estate. New for 2018 is a steampunk twist. Visitors are invited to dress in vintage style and there’s a chance to buy food from local producers and enjoy a picnic by the lakes.

Alchemy of Pigment and Pattern

Learn the alchemy and processes involved in making your own watercolour and gouache paints, using roots, berries and minerals, and learning the processes of precipitating, grinding and binding. Using compasses and straight-edge, participants will also create mandalas that resonate with the planetary patterns.

Introduction to Bowl Turning

West Dean College, West Dean, Chichester

Thursday June 7 (four days)


This is a chance to learn the necessary skills to convert a piece of wood into a finished piece. Participants learn the safe use of tools and working practices, tool selection and sharpening, an understanding of timber, grain orientation on the lathe, design, finishing and an open-minded approach to woodturning. There will be a cost of £15 for timber, Abranet and disc abrasives, and finishes including oils, lacquers and waxes.

The Henfield Festival of Gardens & Arts
